Young Guns Music interviews Stay The Night (English)

You'd surely know about Stay The Night. Their song "Falling In Place" has captivated audiences all over the world. And we were eager to know more abut them. And we had the chance to interview Nikki and the guys so this is what they told us about their past, present and future in the band!

- Young Guns Music : Thank you very much guys for letting us know a bit more about your band. First thing which comes to our mind right now is, for all our readers who are just meeting you for the first time, how would you describe Stay the Night and its music?

A : We’re just a bunch of easy-going kids who like to have fun. We work 9-5 jobs but after dark, we let our real personalities come out to play. Our music really reflects that.

- YGM : Many will say, another female fronted band. Is the eternal comparison with Paramore becoming a serious burden on bands such as Stay the Night or it helps to excel oneself?

N : From the beginning we were always compared to other bands and it didn’t bother us. We used it as a tool to get our music heard. Now that we’ve established ourselves as STAY THE NIGHT, I think it’s time to disconnect the training wheels and stand on our own as a band.

- YGM : When back in 2008 you gathered and decided to make your own music, which kind of audience did you intend to aim to and what music you wanted to play?

A : We originally set out to make music that we loved and what we thought other people would love too. We’ve drawn a lot from our influences but also put our own spin on things to become the band we are today. Our songs are about real life things—something everyone can relate to.

- YGM : Nikki you got into the project in 2009, was it your first professional musical experience? What did you expect to get in Stay the Night at that moment?

N : I had been in a band for a short time prior to joining Stay The Night, but it was completely different sound and we had different goals, and we didn’t always see eye to eye. It wasn’t working out for me. I joined Stay The Night because I was looking for a more serious project that had aspirations to become more than just a garage band.

- YGM : What did you guys took into account when choosing Nikki to join the band?

A : We knew we wanted someone who could sing well, and she could, but more important than that, we wanted someone who we could get along and be friends with. We auditioned a fair amount of people before Nikki, but when she came along, we knew she was the one.

- YGM : Last April 2010 your debut EP "Against the Tides" was released. We imagine that this was a milestone in your history as a band. What can you tell us about it? What was the audience's reaction to it?

N : Against The Tides was an idea that was such a long time coming. Since the day I joined the band, we knew we wanted to release a summer EP and a music video to accompany it. Along the way, we faced so many setbacks and things that just kept popping to delay our progess. “Against The Tides” is a name that encompasses the feeling of all the hardships we went through while trying to record and release our EP. Once it was finally released, we gained a lot of good recognition and new fans from it. Once copies began to sell worldwide, I knew we were onto something.

- YGM : Was "Falling in Place" the debut you ever dreamt of?

A : We were really excited about the attention the video for “Falling In Place” got in the first week of its release, but I think we’re even more excited now that it continues to be popular even months later. It was the first song we wrote together as a band, and it has such a positive message that so many people can relate to. We shot the music video for it in Nikki’s garage, and driving around in a canyon near her house. We were totally blown away by the way it turned out and I think it matches the vibe of the song really well.

- YGM : What is the next step in your career? What do you expect for Stay The Night from 2011?

N : Right now the focus is releasing new material to follow up to Against The Tides. We’ve grown a lot in the past year and we’re anxious to show off our new sound. We’ve also been talking about the possibility of shooting another music video and going on a small US tour in summer. It’s all speculation, but fans can definitely look forward to new Stay The Night songs very soon!

- YGM : We can read that among your influences there are bands such as Jimmy Eat World, Saves The Day or Further Seems Forever. It's obvious that you were fans before artists so if you could choose any band to open for them you would say...

A : Playing with any one of our favorite bands would be amazing, but I think at this stage we are just excited to open up for anyone. We love playing shows with a variety of different artists and seeing how a different audience reacts to our music.

- YGM : Too early to think of international acts?

A : It’s too soon to say, but with all of the fans we have worldwide, I would say that an international tour sometime in the future isn’t totally out of the question!

- YGM : When we know of bands such as Stay the Night coming out or we can see all the movement surrounding the Warped Tour, would we say that music has a future further than Justin Bieber or any other marketing products?

N : I love Justin Bieber! I think his music is amazing!

A : Pop solo artists like JB almost as always reach a tremendous amount of fame right away, but I think there is still room on top for rock bands to grow and connect with a large-scale fan base as well.

- YGM : All Time Low, 30 Seconds To Mars, Paramore... Not covering any of Lady Gaga's songs is a synonym of not being on top?

N : I love when bands cover Lady Gaga, but I don’t think covering her music will make a band any more popular. She’s a great artist and her songs are her own, and Stay The Night songs are ours. I will be totally flattered if people ever start covering our songs, but we aren’t at that point yet.

- YGM : Since Hayley's collab in "Airplanes" there seems to be an avalanch of pop rock chorus in hip hop verses or the opposite. For your music you would do anything but never...?

N : Outside of my work in Stay The Night, I’ve done many collaborations with other artists. My most recent work was with a metal band called Anakefr and I’m looking forward to singing on Stretford End’s upcoming rock opera. I haven’t done a hip hop collaboration yet, but I love many different genres of music so I wouldn’t be surprised if that’s coming up the in future too!

- YGM : Although Stay the Night has not yet been long in the music business we are sure that you've already been through many unforgettable times. Which are your best memories up to now?

N : My favorite memories so far have been meeting fans and hearing their stories. I think a lot of people forget that we’re just normal people, like everyone else, and it feels so good to talk to fans and find out how similar we are. A lot of our “fans” have become my close friends as a result of it.

- YGM : How would you convince any reader who's knowing about you for the first time to give a try to your music?

A : I love getting introduced to new music, and I always try to pass along new bands/songs to my friends. I think a lot of people will enjoy us, too. Just check it out and have fun with us.

- YGM : Thank you very much for your kind attention guys. We really wish you the best and we hope to be able to enjoy your show soon in Europe. Just to finish with, is there anyone whom you would like to thank for all the support given to you?

N : We want to thank our families, fans, friends and anyone who has supported and encouraged us along the way. And we want to thank YOU for helping us get the word out there. We love YOUNG GUNS.
